Peter Andre returns to the hospital where his brother was treated, to hear personal stories and to explore the latest cancer treatments.

Peter’s life was touched by the disease when he lost his brother Andrew to kidney cancer at the end of last year. Andrew was treated at The Royal Marsden hospital, an institution that is home to a world-class centre for cancer research and treatment development.

In the first of five videos, Peter goes back to the hospital to hear personal stories and to explore the latest treatments and resources available to those who are facing cancer.

90% of cancer patents have some type of surgery, whether for diagnosis, treatment or ongoing management of complications

In the 1950s radiotherapy and chemotherapy became more widely available and when used in combination with surgery, it meant doctors could target cancer cells that surgeons couldn’t always remove

85% of breast cancer patients have surgery

Breast cancer is the most common form of cancer in the UK

Prostate cancer is the most common cancer in men in the UK, and it is the second most common cause of cancer death in UK men, after lung cancer.

With thanks to

The Royal Marsden: Founded in 1851 by Dr William Marsden, The Royal Marsden was the world’s first specialist cancer hospital. Dr William Marsden’s vison was to create a pioneering cancer hospital dedicated to excellence in the study, treatment and care of people with cancer. Today, The Royal Marsden is a world-leading cancer centre specialising in cancer diagnosis, treatment, research and education, and has two hospitals: one in London, and another in Surrey.

Mr Chris Ogden, pioneer of radical robotic prostatectomy recently featured in an hour long documentary by the BBC. Horizon: Defeating cancer went behind the scenes at one of Britain’s leading cancer hospitals, the Royal Marsden in London. The film follows Rosemary, Phil and Ray as they undergo remarkable new treatments – from a billion pound genetically targeted drug designed to fight a type of skin cancer, to advanced robotic surgery. We witness the breakthroughs in surgery and in scientific research that are offering new hope and helping to defeat a disease that more than one in three of us will develop at some stage of our lives.
